Amy Winehouse – good songs, bad sound

I broke down and bought Back to Black over the weekend. What a strange reaction – I really enjoy the songs, the performances and the instrumentation, but I *hate* the sound. I have to imagine that what I’m hearing was done on purpose. The album sounds like you are listening to old 45s through crap speakers. But, honestly, the attempt to recreate a Mowtown sound is incredibly distracting. The album is chock full of what we would now consider bad EQ work, clipping, and distortion. Perhaps one could call it "wall of unpleasant noise." May I get a properly mastered and engineered version of this album, please?

I totaly agree!
If you play this back on a half way decent stereo, it sounds awfull. The attempt to re-create the old sound is so digital, tizzy and tasteless i am astounded.
Amy is one of my girlfriends favorite artists. We have been shopping for a new stereo for some time now. One criteria was that is should not make less than ideal recordings sound bad, as we have all kinds of music from different time periods in our collection. Well we susceeded in finding something that makes most everithing sound quite allright. Old motown stuff certainly sounds great.. Back to black still blows.. Ohh well
